Apple Tree Analogy

Two starving travelers are lost in the woods, when suddenly they both discover an apple tree at the same time. The tree has 10 apples. The hikers are very hungry and each wants to eat 7 apples. Each of them requires at least 4 apples to gain enough energy to hike back to civilization.

What is the fair (just, optimum) way to divide up the apples?
